Stone
The stone is a British Columbian Cassiar Jade of consistent high quality. It has a couple of beautiful bright green chrome speckles that are characteristic for this variety.
Design
The design shows a fantail bird with the wings spread out and the tail feathers half opened. It’s that moment when it rushes downwards, already initiating the curve to suddenly jump back up again. I carried the idea quite a time around when I finally found the right piece of stone to apply it. The design matches the properties of the stone perfectly. The grade of translucency of the stone is just enough so that the blurred shadows of the tail feathers become visible through it.
Inspiration
The fantail belongs to a bird species spread all over Australasia, from New Zealand to the heights of Himalaya, and can breed at up to 4000 m of altitude. It’s a non-endangered species, due to his ability to adapt to changing or challenging environments such as deforestation and urban expansion. Their long tail feathers give these birds their famous agility, spread out like a fan whilst flying, these feathers make quick movements and sudden changes in direction possible. Both, the thin piece of BC Jade and the fantail bird in his natural habitat appear delicate, but both are very strong. The dark rich green of the stone is the same colour of the forest, where the fantail lives. The light green freckles that appear here and there around the stone remind me of his characteristic cheekiness: he loves to jump around, like a little dot, seemingly appearing in different places at the same time.
