Stone
The rough stone is a legally purchased and exported original Marsden Flower Nephrite from the South Island Marsden region of New Zealand with its typical flowery patterns, little black iron speckles and a creamy yellow-green rind. On the inside the stone is of overall consistent and translucent quality and varies in green shades from lighter to darker ones. It’s a rare piece of stone that found its way to my hands and I feel blessed for it.
Design
It’s a lettering style that is shown in this piece. The letters T,O and M merge in a threedimensional Graffiti-style with the rind peeling off on the outside and the letters burst out from the inside. Wavy ornaments in a contrasting play of smoothly polished or roughened areas and protruding elements that fade in and out embellish the style of the letters and accelerate their movement. The design has been fit one to one along the original outline of the inner, dark green part of the stone, separating it from the outside rind with a minimal loss of the good material. The arrangement of the letters is a careful adaption to the stone’s properties, the little changes in material and colour.
Inspiration
This piece of art is kind of personal. I’m an urban artist, seeking balance in nature, traveling to the deep forests and lonely landscapes in all corners of our planet. This piece and me, we literally come from opposite worlds, one from the bush of New Zealand, the other from a german city. Those opposites become one in this design. I let the stone speak to me and it whispered my name. I really just took away what was covering the already existing, going perfectly with the quote of the famous italian artist Michelangelo:
“Every block of stone has a (statue) inside and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
