Inspiration
At the time I was deep diving into Māori Mythology when I carved this stone. The design covers different aspects of a more complex mythological concept. Firstly, the Greenstone Toki itself is a powerful object, the tool was used to fell trees and carve wood. It is closely associated with Mana, the Māori concept of spiritual essence. At the center of the piece four connecting elements stand between two interlocking waves. The scene symbolically depicts the separation of earth and sky by Tāne and his three siblings in this version of the Māori creation myth. The top of the piece shows a reference to the top of a sternpost of a Waka, the vessel to travel on spiritual planes.
